Founder Acquisition Funnel Map
Map discovery, signup, access and first value to observable journey steps, with clear units, entry rules and measurement gaps before comparing conversion.

When to use this template
Use this before building a funnel report when marketing, waitlist and product records describe different parts of the journey. Decide which transitions can actually be observed and which remain unlinked.
Choose another approach when: You want to stitch private identities together without an appropriate basis, treat an untracked step as abandonment, or assume a waitlist signup already represents product access.
Gather these inputs
- The real visitor journey and current product access conditions.
- Existing event and operational-state definitions, including their counting units.
- Known observation windows, privacy boundaries and gaps between systems.

Worked example
Illustrative example, not a Crany customer result. Replace every example detail with facts you can verify.
Fictional example: a founder can count a public worksheet visit, a confirmed waitlist record and a later pilot invitation. The product’s first-value task happens only after access is granted. The map identifies a gap between consent-limited public analytics and operational waitlist records. Those counts are not divided as if every visitor and account were reliably linked. A visitor returning on another device may be missing from that connection rather than having abandoned the journey. The founder first reviews whether invitations lead to usable access. The map does not manufacture a complete discovery-to-activation conversion rate from separate reports or call a waitlist record an activated customer.
How to use it
- Describe real outcomes and decide where people can enter the measured journey.
- Map each transition to validated evidence with consistent units and timing.
- Expose unlinked or ineligible steps before producing conversion comparisons.
Check before using it
- A missing observation is not automatically assigned a behavioral cause.
- Account, visitor and event counts are not mixed in one denominator.
- An invitation and successful first use are represented as separate outcomes.
What to measure
Track the transitions that have validated evidence and the boundaries that remain unobservable. Review real task failures before explaining drop-off. A map defines a measurement question; it does not make an incomplete identity graph complete or establish causal conversion lift.
Research and sources
Google documents how funnel entry, sequence and timing affect which users are counted. This original cross-system map applies that need for explicit rules; it does not claim every analytics provider uses GA4’s exact counting behavior.
- Google Analytics: Funnel exploration — checked 2026-10-24. Explicit funnel entry, ordered steps and timing conditions affect counted users. GA4-specific counting behavior is not generalized to every provider.
