Inconclusive Experiment Review Template
Explain an inconclusive test through the original question, data quality, uncertainty and next decision without calling a small observed difference a winner.
When to use this template
Use this after the planned review point when results remain uncertain or important validity questions prevent a clear interpretation.
Choose another approach when: You want to keep peeking until a favorable result appears, rename the winning metric after the fact, or claim that lack of significance proves no effect exists.
Gather these inputs
- The original hypothesis, metrics and analysis plan.
- The actual exposure, sample and outcome report.
- Data-quality checks, guardrails and relevant operational annotations.

Worked example
Illustrative example, not a Crany customer result. Replace every example detail with facts you can verify.
A fictional test shows a slightly higher request rate for B, but its uncertainty range is wide and the planned sample was not reached. The review calls it inconclusive rather than a win. The team can retain the current page while investigating a clearer hypothesis or use its preplanned continuation method if appropriate. It does not switch to click-through because that metric happens to look favorable. The report also avoids claiming the variants are identical merely because the test did not establish a difference.
How to use it
- Return to the predeclared question and review method.
- Assess validity, uncertainty and guardrails before interpreting direction.
- Choose a bounded next step and treat changed hypotheses or designs as new work.
Check before using it
- A non-significant result is not described as proof of no effect.
- Post-hoc favorable metrics do not replace the primary decision criterion.
- Any continuation follows the appropriate planned analysis method.
What to measure
Track whether the next decision resolves a real uncertainty rather than generating a desired headline. An inconclusive test can be informative about feasibility and data quality without proving a product benefit.
Research and sources
The sources support reviewing inconclusive comparisons and planning analysis. The original review format provides no universal stopping rule or statistical calculation.
