Public Community Listening Log Template
Capture task questions and existing solutions from public discussions with context, source links and uncertainty instead of turning posters into a contact list.
When to use this template
Use this when researching language, recurring tasks or unanswered questions in communities you can legitimately read.
Choose another approach when: You want to collect private profiles, infer sensitive traits, send unsolicited messages or present a convenience sample as market-wide frequency.
Gather these inputs
- Public relevant discussions and their actual dates.
- A research question tied to a software audience or task.
- A minimal note format that avoids unnecessary personal identifiers.

Worked example
Illustrative example, not a Crany customer result. Replace every example detail with facts you can verify.
A fictional founder reviews a public discussion about client handoffs. The original question concerns missing login permissions, while the thread title broadly mentions “better documentation.” The log records the narrower access task and notes that commenters already supplied an effective checklist. The founder does not record usernames for outreach or count every reply as a distinct potential customer. The content opportunity may be an access-preparation worksheet, but that remains an editorial hypothesis to validate with appropriate evidence.
How to use it
- Choose a research question and read the complete relevant discussion.
- Record task context, existing answers and uncertainty with a source link.
- Compare distinct discussions and use findings to plan useful content rather than unsolicited contact.
Check before using it
- Private or removed material is not collected.
- People are not profiled beyond the task information needed.
- Discussion frequency is not presented as market size or search volume.
What to measure
Track concrete questions clarified and useful content hypotheses generated. Public listening can reveal language and context, but it is not a substitute for permission-based research or representative measurement.
Research and sources
The sources support contextual relevant participation and task understanding. The listening log is an original research aid, not a lead-scraping or messaging workflow.
