Software Release Notes Template
Write release notes around the actual version, user-visible changes, necessary actions and limitations with a reliable reference to the shipped iteration.
When to use this template
Use this when shipping a real iteration and users need a clear record of changes rather than a promotional announcement alone.
Choose another approach when: You want to list unfinished work as released, expose private security details, or assume a tag proves the production service has been updated.
Gather these inputs
- The exact shipped version or release reference.
- Confirmed user-visible changes and material limitations.
- Any required user action verified against the released product.
Copy and adapt the template
Edit the text below and copy it into your own document. Edits stay in this browser field and are not submitted or saved by this page.
Worked example
Illustrative example, not a Crany customer result. Replace every example detail with facts you can verify.
Fictional release 0.4 adds section reordering and fixes a checklist preview that could display an old title. The notes explain both changes in user terms, link to the real beta help page and state that video import remains unavailable. The owner confirms the hosted beta actually serves 0.4 before announcing availability. A repository tag alone would only identify source history. The notes do not include every internal refactor or promise that all preview issues are permanently eliminated.
How to use it
- Reconcile the release reference with actual deployed or downloadable availability.
- Translate confirmed changes into user-visible behavior and required actions.
- Review limitations and links, then preserve notes as a dated release record.
Check before using it
- Planned work is separated from shipped changes.
- The version reference points to the intended iteration.
- Security-sensitive detail follows the project’s disclosure process.
What to measure
Observe whether users can identify relevant changes and complete any necessary update action. Release-note views and software downloads are different events, and neither proves successful use.
Research and sources
GitHub documents release iterations, notes and assets. This user-focused note format is original and applies more broadly; it does not imply that every hosted app needs a GitHub release.
- GitHub: About releases — checked 2026-10-23. Releases package a particular software iteration with release notes and assets; repository access and release availability are distinct.
- Google: Creating helpful, reliable, people-first content — checked 2026-10-23. Original value, useful answers, transparent sourcing and a clear audience.
