Usability Task Writing Worksheet
Turn a product goal into a realistic test activity with a clear outcome, necessary context and no clues about which interface control to use.
When to use this template
Use this before observing a signup, onboarding or core workflow and you need a task that lets a participant make their own navigation decisions.
Choose another approach when: You intend to test memory of a tutorial, force participants through a feature regardless of their goal, or use private real-world data without permission.
Gather these inputs
- The actual user goal and the context that makes it relevant.
- A safe test state with the information needed to complete the task.
- An observable success condition independent of a particular click path.

Worked example
Illustrative example, not a Crany customer result. Replace every example detail with facts you can verify.
Leading task: “Click Reorder, drag the heading and press Save.” Rewritten fictional task: “Your client needs the website-update instructions in the order they will perform them. Arrange the checklist so the opening step comes first, then show the client view.” The participant has a safe example project and enough context to act. The researcher can observe whether the controls are discoverable without naming them. The final checklist order and preview provide success evidence even if the participant takes an unexpected valid route.
How to use it
- Start with the user outcome rather than the feature you want demonstrated.
- Provide necessary context and remove instructions that reveal interface controls.
- Pilot the activity and record actual completion or assistance during the session.
Check before using it
- The activity asks the person to act, not only describe what they might do.
- Success does not require one arbitrary click sequence.
- The task uses safe data and fits the participant’s actual context.
What to measure
Observe task completion, obstacles and assistance with the test conditions recorded. A well-written scenario improves the observation setup; it does not by itself establish that the interface is usable.
