Customer discovery interview template for app founders

A customer discovery interview helps an app founder understand a specific person’s existing problem, current workaround and decision process. Start with a recent event, reconstruct what happened and separate observations from your interpretation. Use the worksheet below to decide what to investigate next. A compliment about your app is not evidence of demand.

Who should you interview?

Choose people who recently performed the task your app addresses. Write a recruiting criterion before inviting anyone: for example, “independent designers who sent a client invoice in the past month.” That example is illustrative. A broad label such as “freelancer” does not establish whether someone has experienced the problem.

Ask permission to take notes. Explain how you will use them, keep identifying details out of shared worksheets and request separate permission before recording or publishing a quotation. Participation should not require agreeing to a sales conversation.

A 20-minute interview outline

  1. Context: ask the person to describe their role and the last situation in which they needed to complete the task.
  2. Trigger: establish what happened immediately before they started and why the task mattered that day.
  3. Sequence: ask them to walk through the steps, tools, handoffs and interruptions.
  4. Friction: explore where they became stuck and what they did next. Request a concrete example rather than suggesting a problem.
  5. Alternative: ask how they handled the task before, what they changed and why.
  6. Consequence: ask what happened when the task was delayed or incomplete. Record estimates as estimates.
  7. Close: repeat your understanding and invite corrections. Ask whether a separate prototype session would be welcome.

Questions that produce usable evidence

Try “Walk me through the last time this happened,” then follow with “What did you do next?” or “What made that step difficult?” Avoid introducing your feature as the solution before you understand the experience. Yale’s interview resource covers tasks, current and past experience, discovery paths and alternative resources. Teresa Torres recommends grounding interviews in specific stories about past behavior.

An illustrative decision

A participant describes manually reconciling invoice payments, but says this happens only once a quarter and takes a few minutes. That supports the existence of a task, not urgency for a new subscription. Another person describes repeated missed payments and an existing paid workaround. Investigate the difference in their workflows before combining both into one customer segment. Neither example is a Crany customer result.

When to change the plan

If participants cannot recall the task, refine recruitment. If the difficulty occurs in a different step than expected, revise the problem statement. If people already solve it comfortably, investigate another problem rather than treating polite interest as validation. Keep contradictory interviews in your notes.

Sources and editorial method

This original script and worksheet were prepared with AI assistance by Tangenix from Yale’s user interview questions and Teresa Torres’s customer interview guide, consulted on 22 October 2026. The schedule and decision examples are editorial suggestions, not research findings or guaranteed outcomes.

Questions founders ask

How many customer interviews prove demand?

There is no universal interview count that proves demand. Use interviews to identify patterns and contradictions, then test whether people actually use or pay for a solution.

Is this worksheet part of the Crany app?

No. It is a free standalone worksheet. Crany is an AI marketing co-founder in development; the public waitlist is open.
