A SaaS marketing plan for solo founders
A useful early SaaS marketing plan connects one customer problem, one way to reach those customers, and one measurable action. Start with a weekly experiment you can finish alongside building your product. Record both the response and what people actually do after signing up.
This worksheet is for founders with a working product and limited marketing time. You can use it immediately, without joining the Crany waitlist.
Write the customer problem before choosing a channel
Describe a specific person, the task they are trying to finish and the moment it becomes difficult. Find a real conversation, support request or interview that supports your description. Save the words they use. A broad audience such as “small businesses” leaves too many different problems inside the same plan.
For an illustrative release-note app, the segment could be two-person SaaS teams shipping several updates a week. The problem could be customers missing changes because nobody has time to turn internal tickets into readable announcements.
Choose one channel you can actually test
| What you already know | First experiment | Evidence to record |
|---|---|---|
| You know people with the problem | Ask for a short product walkthrough with a specific use case | Replies, walkthroughs and completed core tasks |
| A community discusses the problem openly | Answer a relevant question with a useful example; follow its rules and disclose your connection | Relevant conversations, attributed visits and activated users |
| People search for a task your product solves | Publish a working example or template that helps complete that task | Search impressions, visits and use of the example |
Choose the route with the clearest evidence and a manageable time commitment. Search content can take time to be discovered, so review early conversations and search impressions separately.
A worked weekly experiment
For the release-note app, spend one week showing a before-and-after announcement to ten relevant founder contacts who are open to product feedback. Offer a brief walkthrough using one of their updates. Limit the experiment to two hours and use a tagged link to a page that shows the same example.
Define activation as publishing a first release note. Record how many contacts reply, visit, sign up and publish. Ten contacts and two hours are example work limits you can adjust; they are not expected results.
If people reply but decline a walkthrough, save their objections and revise the offer. If they sign up but never publish, inspect the setup step with them. If they publish and ask to use it again, test the same offer with another small group before committing more time.
Copy the SaaS marketing plan worksheet
Fill this into a document or spreadsheet. Keep the observation links alongside the plan so the next decision has evidence behind it.
Product and stage: One customer segment: Problem they are actively trying to solve: Where you observed that problem (link or conversation): Offer and evidence you can show: One channel to test: Action you want a person to take: What successful product use looks like: Time and money limit: Experiment start / review date: Reached / replied / visited / signed up / activated: What happened and what you will change:
Review the plan once a week
- Check whether you completed the planned work within your time and money limit.
- Separate attention, signups and actual product use. Record the raw counts before interpreting percentages from a small sample.
- Write down the strongest objection or question in the customer’s words.
- Change one part of the next experiment: audience, offer, channel or onboarding. Keep the others stable enough to learn.
A quiet week is still evidence. A small sample can suggest what to investigate, but it cannot establish a reliable conversion rate or promise your first hundred users.
