Activation Milestone Evidence Plan
Investigate whether a candidate first-value milestone reflects a completed user task, reliable tracking and later use before calling it product activation.

When to use this template
Use this when a team wants to call signup, a tutorial click or an early task “activation” but has not checked what value it represents. Begin with a real user outcome and keep task evidence separate from analytics instrumentation.
Choose another approach when: You want to declare product-market fit from one event, choose a milestone because it makes a funnel look larger, or treat a correlation with retention as proof that forcing the action causes retention.
Gather these inputs
- The user task and what a useful completed outcome would look like.
- A candidate milestone and evidence of how its event is actually recorded.
- A suitable later-use window, eligible population and known data or consent gaps.

Worked example
Illustrative example, not a Crany customer result. Replace every example detail with facts you can verify.
Fictional example: Handoff Notes initially labels creating a blank checklist as activation. A task observation shows that an empty checklist does not yet give a client usable instructions. The founder proposes a more meaningful candidate: preparing a preview that a client can use to locate the required update. They check whether the event reflects that outcome rather than only opening the preview screen. Assisted attempts remain identified as assisted. Later return-use evidence is not yet available, so the milestone stays provisional. The team does not invent a retention percentage, apply another product’s benchmark or infer that making everyone click the preview will cause long-term use.
How to use it
- State the useful task outcome and examine whether the candidate behavior actually represents it.
- Check tracking false positives, missing observations and the effect of founder assistance.
- Investigate later use with an appropriate comparison and keep causal claims separate from associations.
Check before using it
- A recorded click or account creation is not automatically treated as realized value.
- People without a full opportunity to return are not compared as if their observation windows were complete.
- The milestone remains provisional when task or later-use evidence is missing.
What to measure
Track the gap between recorded milestones and verified task outcomes, then examine later-use associations under a stable definition. Record selection effects and missing data. This plan cannot prove that a milestone causes retention or that activation is equivalent to paid demand.
Research and sources
Amplitude recommends defining value-related activation and checking its relationship with retention; NN/g supports task observation. This original validation plan adopts no benchmark, hypothetical percentage or causal growth claim from the sources.
