App Welcome Screen Copy Template
Write a first-use screen that explains the immediate task and genuine setup needs without forcing a promotional tour before useful work.
When to use this template
Use this when a released or appropriately limited app needs a short first-use explanation before the person starts a real task.
Choose another approach when: You want to repeat the landing-page pitch, add setup questions without a product need, or claim the user has completed a task before anything is saved.
Gather these inputs
- The person’s intended first task and actual access.
- The minimum setup the product genuinely needs.
- A working next action and a way to reach help later.

Worked example
Illustrative example, not a Crany customer result. Replace every example detail with facts you can verify.
A fictional checklist app welcomes an invited designer with a prompt to create their first client instruction checklist. It asks for a project title because that identifies the actual saved project; it does not require a long marketing profile first. If sample exploration is supported, the person can choose it with clear sample-data labeling. The welcome screen does not celebrate a completed handoff or force a tour of every setting. Help remains available later where the person performs the relevant action.
How to use it
- Identify the immediate task and separate required setup from promotional questions.
- Write a short orientation and a working action matched to current access.
- Observe a relevant new user starting work and check whether help remains findable later.
Check before using it
- The screen does not block work with unrelated feature promotion.
- Every requested input has a real setup purpose.
- Action wording and the next product state agree.
What to measure
Observe whether new users understand and start the intended task, recording actual obstacles. A concise welcome can reduce explanation overhead but does not guarantee activation or retention.
Research and sources
Contextual help and realistic task observation inform this original welcome scaffold. It does not claim a universally best onboarding sequence or a measured activation uplift.
