Content Reader Task Brief Template
Justify a new marketing resource through an evidenced reader task, a useful output and clear acceptance criteria before choosing a format.
When to use this template
Use this when a content idea begins with a keyword or format but the team cannot explain what a reader can accomplish with it.
Choose another approach when: You want to reverse-engineer a user need solely to justify an existing pitch, invent research evidence, or create a separate page that repeats an existing useful answer.
Gather these inputs
- Evidence of a relevant reader task or uncertainty.
- The current resources and workarounds for that task.
- A proposed useful output that can be delivered without misleading access claims.
Copy and adapt the template

Worked example
Illustrative example, not a Crany customer result. Replace every example detail with facts you can verify.
A fictional founder proposes “an article about collaboration.” The brief narrows the task to preparing website-update instructions another person can follow. Evidence comes from a relevant conversation, not an invented search-volume number. The useful output is a handoff checklist with a worked example and an access-preparation step. Acceptance means a reader can adapt those instructions to a project. If an existing page already provides that answer, the team improves it instead of creating another generic collaboration article with a different title.
How to use it
- Find evidence of the reader task and inspect existing ways to complete it.
- Define a concrete useful output and acceptance criteria independent of a signup.
- Check overlap and choose the format that best delivers the missing help.
Check before using it
- The need is written from the reader’s task rather than the company’s desire for traffic.
- An evidence gap is visible instead of disguised as research.
- The content can meet its stated acceptance criteria.
What to measure
Assess whether relevant readers can use the output to complete the stated task. A justified brief is a planning result, not evidence that the page will attract traffic or rank.
