First Customer Conversation Agenda
Run an explicitly commercial founder conversation that checks the buyer’s task, shows relevant capabilities and ends with an honest next step.

When to use this template
Use this when the other person knows the conversation may include a product offer and has agreed to it. Start with their needs before showing what the available product can do.
Choose another approach when: The person only agreed to a research interview, asked not to be contacted, or needs a capability you intend to pretend already exists.
Gather these inputs
- The agreed purpose and practical time available for the conversation.
- Current capabilities, access conditions and accurate commercial terms if applicable.
- The prospect’s stated task and a relevant safe demonstration path.

Worked example
Illustrative example, not a Crany customer result. Replace every example detail with facts you can verify.
Fictional prospect agrees to a discussion of a handoff organizer. The founder learns that the main problem is receiving client approval, then demonstrates only how the current tool organizes review notes. It cannot approve work on the client’s behalf, so that limitation is stated plainly. The prospect asks for a sample workflow before considering access. The founder records that optional next step, not a closed sale. The discussion is not counted as an unbiased discovery interview or turned into an unapproved testimonial.
How to use it
- Confirm the commercial purpose and learn the task before demonstrating.
- Connect supported capabilities to actual requirements and disclose relevant limits.
- Agree a voluntary next step or accept non-fit, preserving accurate commitments.
Check before using it
- A sales discussion is not mislabeled as an independent interview.
- No feature, price, deadline or guarantee is invented.
- The close permits a genuine decision not to proceed.
What to measure
Record conversations, agreed follow-ups, actual product attempts and completed purchases separately. A polite response or scheduled meeting does not establish revenue or product-market fit.
Research and sources
YC discusses listening and relevant buyer needs; Torres distinguishes discovery from selling. This original agenda avoids treating a commercial conversation as neutral research and makes no closing-rate claim.
