Lost Prospect Learning Log
Record what is actually known when a buying conversation stops, preserving unknown reasons and separating prospect statements from sales-team guesses.

When to use this template
Use this after a prospect declines, defers or stops responding. Capture existing evidence first; any optional follow-up must be appropriate to the person’s stated preferences.
Choose another approach when: The person asked not to be contacted, you intend to disguise another sales pitch as research, or you plan to classify silence as a confirmed price objection.
Gather these inputs
- The agreed conversation history and actual last observed step.
- Any voluntarily provided reason and its original context.
- The current offer and a distinction between known facts and seller interpretation.

Worked example
Illustrative example, not a Crany customer result. Replace every example detail with facts you can verify.
Fictional prospect stops responding after receiving a pilot outline. The founder initially labels the deal “too expensive”, but the prospect never mentioned price. The log keeps the reason unknown and separately records that the outline did not explain the time the pilot required. The founder can improve that explanation for future prospects without asserting it caused this loss. No further contact is made if unwanted. Silence is not recorded as a negative product review or proof of a competitor’s advantage.
How to use it
- Preserve what happened and the exact evidence before selecting an explanation.
- Separate stated reasons, seller hypotheses and inspectable offer defects.
- Choose a bounded learning action and respect the existing contact preference.
Check before using it
- Unknown reasons remain unknown.
- A follow-up has a transparent learning purpose and does not reopen a declined pitch deceptively.
- The log does not turn private prospect details into public marketing claims.
What to measure
Track how many reasons are actually stated versus inferred, and whether repeated evidence supports a change. A few stopped conversations cannot establish the prevalence or causal importance of an objection.

HubSpot identifies loss analysis as a distinct conversation purpose; Torres supports experience-based learning. The evidence labels and example are original, not a validated taxonomy or an instruction to contact a particular person.
