Landing Page Comprehension Test Template
Observe whether a relevant new visitor understands the product, access conditions and next action without giving them the intended answer.
When to use this template
Use this when the team agrees on the intended message but has not checked what someone outside the project understands from the page.
Choose another approach when: You want to lead participants to repeat your headline, measure statistical conversion uplift from a few interviews, or test with people who already know the intended answer.
Gather these inputs
- A representative public page or clearly labeled prototype.
- A participant with relevant task context who has not been briefed on the pitch.
- The specific uncertainty and an appropriate observation record.

Worked example
Illustrative example, not a Crany customer result. Replace every example detail with facts you can verify.
A fictional designer reads a prelaunch page and says the primary button will create an account immediately. The page actually records a waitlist signup. The researcher records the mismatch before explaining the offer. The participant also finds the example checklist useful, so the team does not assume every part of the page failed. The next change clarifies the access condition beside the button, followed by another observation. The session is qualitative evidence about comprehension, not a measured conversion lift.
How to use it
- Recruit for task relevance and describe a realistic entry context without teaching the pitch.
- Ask open comprehension questions and observe where the participant seeks answers.
- Compare their interpretation with the real offer and test a targeted clarification.
Check before using it
- Prompts do not contain the answer the researcher hopes to hear.
- The participant’s interpretation is recorded before correction.
- A small qualitative sample is not presented as a population percentage.
What to measure
Track recurring misunderstandings and whether a revised page resolves them in later relevant sessions. The test diagnoses explanation problems; it cannot independently forecast conversion or market demand.
Research and sources
The sources support realistic tasks and open questions about goals and understanding. This comprehension script is original; it is not a standardized or timed five-second test.
