Marketing Email Unsubscribe Journey QA
Check the body unsubscribe route and header-based one-click flow separately, verifying the actual list-state change with controlled test records.

When to use this template
Use this when an authorized team is validating a subscription email before a permission-based campaign. Test against controlled recipients and document both the message mechanism and the resulting audience state.
Choose another approach when: You intend to click a real customer’s private unsubscribe token, assume a footer preference page fulfills every provider’s one-click requirement, or use this worksheet as global legal advice.
Gather these inputs
- The exact message version, mailing-list scope and controlled test recipient.
- Redacted body-link and List-Unsubscribe header evidence from the actual message.
- The provider’s audience-state view and the owner responsible for suppression propagation.

Worked example
Illustrative example, not a Crany customer result. Replace every example detail with facts you can verify.
Fictional example: a team tests its newsletter using a controlled address. The footer opens a working preference page, but the actual message has no functioning header-based one-click route. The QA sheet keeps those results separate rather than declaring the entire unsubscribe system verified. After the authorized implementation owner corrects the mechanism, the team observes the controlled contact leaving the intended marketing audience. It also checks the next audience calculation so a successful response page does not hide a stale queue. The public record contains only a private test reference, never a subscriber token. This example does not unsubscribe any real person or claim that an account-security notice and a newsletter necessarily share one suppression scope.
How to use it
- Choose a controlled recipient and identify the exact marketing list affected.
- Verify body and header mechanisms independently against the actual message.
- Observe the audience-state change and downstream exclusion before approving the flow.
Check before using it
- A preference landing page has not been substituted for the RFC8058 header flow.
- Test evidence contains no real subscriber token or unnecessary personal data.
- Successful request handling is followed by an observed list-state and audience check.
What to measure
Track failed paths, propagation gaps and time to the actual audience-state update. Keep provider requirements and applicable legal obligations explicitly scoped. Passing this QA does not prove every mail client displays an unsubscribe control.
Research and sources
RFC8058 defines the header-based HTTPS POST mechanism and DKIM requirements; Gmail distinguishes it from ordinary body preference links. This original QA matrix uses controlled records and does not change anyone’s subscription or certify legal compliance.
- IETF RFC8058: Signaling One-Click Functionality for List Email Headers — checked 2026-10-24. Header-based one-click HTTPS POST flow, DKIM coverage and implementation requirements. Do not substitute a body preferences page or test a real subscriber token.
- Gmail: Email sender guidelines FAQ — checked 2026-10-24. Primary-domain bulk-sender classification, persistent classification and header-based one-click versus body links. Exact provider context remains necessary.
