Product Demo Sample Data Plan
Prepare realistic fictional demo data that reveals the intended workflow without exposing customer records or presenting sample outcomes as real results.
When to use this template
Use this before recording screenshots or a demo where empty screens would make the workflow hard to understand.
Choose another approach when: You want to reuse private production data, invent testimonials, or make sample analytics look like real traction.
Gather these inputs
- The exact task and product state the demonstration must show.
- A permitted demo environment and fictional input records.
- A clear disclosure for sample data, mockups or prototype behavior.

Worked example
Illustrative example, not a Crany customer result. Replace every example detail with facts you can verify.
A fictional checklist demo uses “Example Bicycle Studio” and three website-update steps. The recording starts with one incomplete item, reorders sections and opens the actual client preview. A visible note identifies the project as sample data. The founder does not import a real client email or populate a dashboard with invented revenue. The example is realistic enough to explain the task while making no claim that the fictional business exists or achieved a result using the product.
How to use it
- Define the workflow before adding decorative records.
- Create minimum fictional inputs and check every visible surface for private information.
- Run and capture the real supported behavior, retaining sample/prototype labels where needed.
Check before using it
- No real customer or secret is visible in the capture.
- Sample outcomes are not presented as verified product results.
- The demo does not imply functionality added only by editing.
What to measure
Ask a relevant viewer to explain the task and what the product actually did. A polished sample demo demonstrates behavior under those inputs; it is not evidence of customer adoption or business impact.
Research and sources
Realistic tasks and accurate representation inform this original demo-data plan. It does not replace a privacy review or grant permission to use third-party records.
