Redirect Verification Template

Map old public URLs to relevant destinations and verify status, path preservation, redirect chains and final canonical behavior.

When to use this template

Use this for an authorized host or path change when existing public links should continue to send users to the corresponding resource.

Choose another approach when: You have not inventoried the old routes, intend to redirect every unrelated page to the homepage, or are considering changes to authentication callbacks without integration-specific validation.

Worked example

Illustrative example, not a Crany customer result. Replace every example detail with facts you can verify.

A fictional site renames /guides/client-notes to /guides/client-handoff-notes because the article’s topic became clearer.
The matrix maps the old article to the renamed article, not to the homepage. It verifies the first redirect and checks that the final page serves the intended guide with a consistent canonical.
The team separately records sign-in callback routes as out of scope. A marketing URL cleanup does not justify changing authentication behavior.
If the path is only temporarily unavailable, the intended temporary behavior is documented rather than assuming every redirect should be permanent.

How to use it

  1. Choose an equivalent destination based on the original user task.
  2. Apply only the authorized mapping and inspect the complete response chain.
  3. Verify the final content, canonical and important user paths before calling the change complete.

Check before using it

What to measure

Track broken incoming paths, redirect errors and continuity of relevant public journeys. Search visibility after a move requires separate observation; a technically successful redirect does not guarantee unchanged rankings.

Research and sources

Google explains redirect types and their search implications. This matrix is an original verification aid, not a recommendation to alter unrelated routes or a guarantee about migration outcomes.
