Audience Fit Statement Template
Explain who an app is useful for, the relevant task conditions and when another workflow is a better fit.
When to use this template
Use this when a broad product promise attracts people whose task, platform or access needs the current product cannot satisfy.
Choose another approach when: You want to exclude people using irrelevant personal characteristics, disguise a missing capability, or shame users who prefer another approach.
Gather these inputs
- The supported task and the product’s real operating conditions.
- Common mismatches observed through research or support.
- An honest alternative or next step for people outside the fit.

Worked example
Illustrative example, not a Crany customer result. Replace every example detail with facts you can verify.
A fictional handoff-checklist tool may fit independent designers who need to leave clients a short set of website-update instructions. It may not fit an organization that requires an audited enterprise knowledge base, because that capability is not part of the example product. A designer whose clients already use a clear shared document may not need to switch. The statement acknowledges that possibility rather than presenting software adoption as the only reasonable choice. The fit boundaries describe task and product conditions, not a demographic stereotype or a fabricated market segment.
How to use it
- List the actual task conditions that make the product useful.
- Turn known mismatches into respectful, factual boundaries.
- Review the statement against the released product and relevant user accounts before publishing.
Check before using it
- Every inclusion condition relates to the task or product.
- Unsupported needs are stated without inventing competitor claims.
- A better-fit alternative is not framed as a failure by the prospective user.
What to measure
Track whether better-qualified users reach the intended first task and whether mismatch-related support questions become clearer. Fewer signups can be compatible with a more accurate fit statement; volume alone is not the decision criterion.
Research and sources
The sources support task context and accurate useful information. The fit/exclusion format is an original editorial aid, not a scientific segmentation method or advice to discriminate on sensitive traits.
