Hands-On Product Practice Plan Template
Design a small optional practice task with safe inputs, useful contextual guidance and an observable result instead of a passive feature tour.
When to use this template
Use this when a genuinely unfamiliar interaction needs practice and the person can work on a safe example without losing their real task.
Choose another approach when: You want to force everyone through a game, change production data without clear intent, or count completing a tutorial as proof of long-term product value.
Gather these inputs
- A real unfamiliar task supported by the product.
- A safe example state with clear sample-data labeling.
- The minimum contextual guidance and a working exit/revisit route.

Worked example
Illustrative example, not a Crany customer result. Replace every example detail with facts you can verify.
A fictional checklist app offers an optional sample project for practicing section reordering. The learner arranges three sample sections into a useful sequence and opens a preview to see the result. The exercise never edits a real client project. A contextual hint is available near the relevant action, and the person can leave and return. Finishing the example shows that this task was performed under those conditions; it is not reported as a completed real handoff or proof that the person will keep using the app.
How to use it
- Confirm that a real interaction needs practice rather than adding a tour by default.
- Create a safe small example and place optional guidance at the point of action.
- Observe the task result, recovery and exit path with a relevant learner.
Check before using it
- The exercise is clearly separate from live client data.
- Practice is relevant to a real task and can be left appropriately.
- A viewed screen is not counted as demonstrated skill.
What to measure
Observe whether people can repeat the relevant task with less assistance in a suitable later context. A successful sample exercise does not establish long-term proficiency or retention.

Contextual learning and realistic tasks inform this original practice plan. It does not claim that every product needs instructional onboarding or that gamification improves outcomes.
