Troubleshooting Article Decision Tree Template
Build a task-focused help article that distinguishes observed symptoms, safe checks and verified next actions without asking users to guess technical causes.
When to use this template
Use this when a support article lists many possible fixes without helping the reader determine which condition applies.
Choose another approach when: You want to recommend destructive resets, collect credentials, invent a cause from a symptom, or ask people to run unverified commands.
Gather these inputs
- The actual supported product version and symptom.
- Safe diagnostic checks and verified recovery actions.
- A working escalation route for unresolved or unknown conditions.
Copy and adapt the template
Edit the text below and copy it into your own document. Edits stay in this browser field and are not submitted or saved by this page.
Worked example
Illustrative example, not a Crany customer result. Replace every example detail with facts you can verify.
A fictional client preview shows an old title. The article first asks whether the edited title is visible in the actual saved checklist. If not, the reader checks the verified save result; if it is, the article follows a separately tested preview-refresh branch. The guide does not tell everyone to delete account data or claim the browser cache is definitely responsible. If the supported checks do not resolve it, the reader gets a safe support route and is asked for version and symptom details rather than passwords or private client text.
How to use it
- Start from the reader’s observable symptom and define the supported context.
- Branch on safe checks whose results lead to verified appropriate actions.
- Test each path and provide a clear stop/escalation condition for unknown cases.
Check before using it
- Symptoms and causes remain distinct unless evidence establishes the cause.
- No destructive or unverified recovery step is included.
- Each branch has a result the reader can actually observe.
What to measure
Track which verified branches resolve the intended symptom and where readers still need support. A decision tree covers documented cases, not every possible cause or environment.
Research and sources
Task-focused concrete help and accurate information inform this original troubleshooting tree. The fictional checks are illustrative and must be replaced with tested product-specific actions.
