Value Proposition Comparison Test

Compare two truthful product messages with neutral comprehension prompts, a recorded exposure order and explicit limits on what the sessions show.

When to use this template

Use this when you have two accurate explanations of the same offer and need to understand which assumptions, tasks and limitations readers infer. Keep product scope and availability constant across both versions.

Choose another approach when: You need a statistically powered conversion experiment, plan to compare a truthful message against an exaggerated promise, or want friendly votes to substitute for observed understanding.

Worked example

Illustrative example, not a Crany customer result. Replace every example detail with facts you can verify.

Fictional example: Message A says “Organize client handoffs.” Message B says “Prepare website-update checklists for client handoffs.” Both describe the same limited pilot and show the same access condition.
A designer seeing A first assumes the product includes a full client portal. After B, they describe a narrower checklist workflow. Another designer sees B first and understands the task without the portal assumption.
The founder records exposure order and the actual interpretations, rather than announcing B as a statistically proven winner. The next revision addresses the portal ambiguity. A live conversion test would need its own traffic, measurement plan and decision rules.

How to use it

  1. Keep the offer truthful and define the interpretation you need to investigate before testing.
  2. Vary and record which message readers encounter first; use identical neutral prompts.
  3. Inspect misunderstandings and order effects before deciding what wording deserves another check.

What to measure

Track accurate task restatements, unsupported assumptions and unresolved questions by exposure order. These sessions can identify wording problems. They cannot isolate conversion impact or prove willingness to buy; those require separate behavioral evidence.

Research and sources

Strategyzer distinguishes learning about customer needs, proposed value and willingness to pay, and warns that researcher presence and verbal evidence have limits. This message-comparison protocol is original and qualitative, not a source-validated A/B test or statistical method.
