YouTube Video Chapter Task Map

Turn a finished software tutorial into accurate task chapters, validate timestamp spacing and check what each chapter actually teaches.

When to use this template

Use this when a published or final-cut tutorial contains several useful sections that viewers may need to revisit. Work from actual footage and its final timing rather than inventing chapter names before the edit.

Choose another approach when: You need a recording storyboard, want keyword-stuffed chapter titles unrelated to the footage, or are trying to stretch a very short clip into artificial sections.

Worked example

Illustrative example, not a Crany customer result. Replace every example detail with facts you can verify.

Fictional example for a final three-minute tutorial:
00:00 Check the source invoice
00:35 Build the saved filter
01:40 Export and verify the file
The editor checks all three boundaries against the actual final video, including the last chapter's duration. A direct viewer entering the filter section still receives a brief reminder about the required source data.
After an introductory cut is shortened, the chapter list becomes stale. The map calls for rechecking the affected timestamps rather than keeping a formally valid but inaccurate list. These timings illustrate a completed asset; they are not timestamps for a real Crany video or a claim that chapters have been enabled on a channel.

How to use it

  1. Identify useful section boundaries by watching the final video rather than its draft script.
  2. Write task labels and validate timestamp order, count and chapter durations.
  3. Seek every boundary and recheck the list after any timeline change.

Check before using it

What to measure

Track wrong boundaries, confusing labels and repeated viewer navigation questions. Use later task feedback where available rather than claiming chapter clicks prove learning. Correct chapter metadata does not establish indexing, key moments or rankings.

Research and sources

YouTube specifies manual chapter formatting and explains that manual chapters override automatic chapters. This original task map adds final-cut and direct-entry checks without promising automatic chapter availability or Google search features.
