Research Evidence Synthesis Template

Turn interview notes into observations, competing explanations and testable marketing decisions without inventing consensus.

When to use this template

Use this after several relevant conversations when quotes and impressions are accumulating but the team cannot explain which evidence supports a positioning decision.

Choose another approach when: You lack permission to retain the notes, need a statistical population estimate, or intend to hide interviews that disagree with the emerging story.

Worked example

Illustrative example, not a Crany customer result. Replace every example detail with facts you can verify.

Decision: lead the homepage with “fewer approval mix-ups” or “faster project delivery.”
Observation A: a designer described sending the wrong attachment after two email revisions.
Observation B: another designer said approval was easy, but getting the initial brief took days.
Interpretation: file-version problems may define one segment rather than all designers.
Next test: show a version-history workflow to people who recently had an approval mix-up and observe whether they complete a real review.
Decision now: write a narrow landing-page draft; do not announce that all freelancers need it.

How to use it

  1. Create one evidence row per observation rather than a paragraph of collective impressions.
  2. Group by task and circumstance before counting repeated words.
  3. Choose a small test that could disprove the favored explanation and record when to revisit the decision.

Check before using it

What to measure

Track whether subsequent behavior supports the recorded hypothesis and whether the team revisits incorrect interpretations. A useful synthesis reduces unsupported certainty; it does not make qualitative notes statistically representative.

Research and sources

The sources establish interviews as a way to learn context and behavior. The evidence matrix and decision rules are original editorial tools for preserving the distinction between observation and inference.
