When to use this template
Use this when people attempt to sign up but encounter different obstacles. Start with observed errors, unclear requirements or failed recovery rather than inferring motivation from an incomplete funnel.
Choose another approach when: You only know that a visitor left, need to diagnose an in-product onboarding task, or plan to remove necessary access controls merely to reduce the number of steps.
Gather these inputs
- The real signup promise, required inputs and expected completion state.
- Safe observations or reproducible reports from people attempting signup.
- Actual instructions, validation feedback and recovery behavior in the relevant version.

Worked example
Illustrative example, not a Crany customer result. Replace every example detail with facts you can verify.
Fictional example: a designer submits a signup form with a valid address but receives “Something went wrong”. The error is reproducible under one documented account condition, and the page provides no way to recover. The founder prioritizes a truthful explanation and a working recovery path over changing button color. A separate observer’s hesitation over an optional company-name field is recorded, but not treated as the same blocking defect or as proof that the field caused abandonment. After repair, a fresh test reaches the correct signup acknowledgement. That verifies the scoped task change; it does not establish a conversion uplift or justify weakening account protection.
How to use it
- Locate the barrier before account creation and preserve the observed conditions.
- Compare task impact, available recovery and evidence before choosing a repair.
- Retest the relevant path after the change and retain uncertainty about unobserved cases.
Check before using it
- Silence or an abandoned session is not assigned a cause without evidence.
- Error recovery and instructions match actual product behavior.
- A repair does not remove a necessary access boundary or claim an unmeasured conversion gain.
What to measure
Track reproduced barriers, completed recoveries and unresolved signup tasks using a stable definition. A repair check can show that a particular path works; estimating prevalence or causal conversion impact needs separate data and a suitable design.
