Software Positioning One-Liner Template
Write a clear product introduction from the audience, real task, available capability and meaningful distinction you can support.
When to use this template
Use this when the current introduction is a slogan or a list of AI features that does not explain the actual customer task.
Choose another approach when: The product’s scope is undecided, you need to hide that it is prelaunch, or the proposed distinction depends on an unsupported claim of being the best.
Gather these inputs
- A task-based audience definition.
- The product’s actual available or explicitly planned capability.
- Evidence for a useful distinction and the current access status.

Worked example
Illustrative example, not a Crany customer result. Replace every example detail with facts you can verify.
Vague introduction: “The next-generation AI operating system for success.” Clearer fictional introduction: “Handoff Notes is a checklist tool for independent designers who need to leave clients clear website-update instructions.” If the product is still in development: “We’re building a checklist tool for client website handoffs. The public waitlist is open; app access has not launched.” Neither version invents a customer count or performance advantage. A useful distinction, such as a real client preview, is added only when it exists and matters to the audience.
How to use it
- Write the audience and task without using the product’s internal feature names.
- Choose a familiar category description and only a supported distinction.
- Test whether a relevant person can restate the product’s purpose and access status after reading it.
Check before using it
- The introduction communicates a concrete task rather than a broad outcome promise.
- The product stage is not concealed.
- Superlatives and competitor comparisons have been removed unless evidence supports them.
What to measure
Ask relevant readers what they think the product does and who can use it today. Clarity can be observed in their explanation; a polished sentence by itself does not prove market demand or conversion improvement.
Research and sources
Task-focused audience research and accurate original content inform the inputs. The sentence structure is an original editorial scaffold, not a formula endorsed by the cited sources or a ranking technique.
